It follows a group of military superhumans consisting of a human leader, a werewolf, a vampire, a Frankenstein’s monster, and a gorgon. Gunn then greenlit the project himself when he became CEO of DC Studios. Writer and series creator James Gunn appears in the opening credits with a laptop writing a script. .

He appears in AniMat’s Crazy Cartoon Cast: The Return of the King (of the Hill) (2023). I’ll admit I’m a little surprised by the (current) ratings for this show. It’s not terrible by any means, but it does feel a little flat and forced at the same time — maybe from moment to moment. There are a few funny lines, but many of them miss the mark or are too silly.

Indira Varma as the Bride is simply a standout performance in the show, and Alan Tudyk as the GI Robot is a close second, but the rest are uninspired, especially David Harbour’s reading of Frankenstein’s Monster. I didn’t even realize it was his voice until the credits rolled. The animation looks very clean and well-done when he’s not moving, but despite the new technology in animation, it still feels like almost all of the movement is at less than 10 frames per second — although the fight scenes are much more dynamic and fluid by comparison. I don’t know if the low frame rates are meant to make it look like traditional hand-drawn animation, but it ends up looking strangely stiff and cheap, especially when the art itself is so polished.

Another personal conundrum that may not resonate with everyone (but it’s been the case with a lot of shows and movies lately for me) is that this is a «mature» series with all that goes with it, but despite some tame moments of sensuality and sexual jokes, the sexual content is rather mild (the nudity is very brief and veiled), but the violence is explicit, detailed, and frequent. I find that when shows are high in violence and most of the sexual content is played for laughs, it makes them feel like they’re aimed at older teens, not adults. Again, this may not be a detriment to the quality of the show for many people, but for those who understand what I’m talking about, here it is. That said, I still enjoy it enough to watch more episodes when they’re released, my expectations are a little lower at this point.
